USPS Handcar Stamp

In 1983 the United States Postal Service commissioned a handcar stamp to commemorate the device.

In reality employees were prohibited from riding a handcar with their backs towards the direction of travel as it was quite dangerous. On July 4, 1887 Hiram Agen who was not employed by the railroad rode backwards on a handcar near Allegan, Michigan. He lost his balance and fell off the front of the car. The handcar rolled over his head, killing him.
